UNCERTAINTY

Entrepreneurship is much like fighting in many respects. When you consider combat sports, the primary reason they are so difficult to master is due to the skill being largely counter to human nature. Stepping towards punches to manage distance, checking kicks with your shins, etc. Along the same vein, your mind is going to fight you every step of the way in the early stages of your business career.

One of the largest components of this mental battle is dealing with the inherency of uncertainty. Looking at your vocational track record may lend some context. In a traditional education system and corporate structure, we expect results to be relatively easy, fast, and guaranteed. The problem is that building a company is the precise opposite, with one exception. The path is extremely long, unbelievably difficult, and far from guaranteed, but at the end of that path is the dream in all its glory.

Many young, hopeful entrepreneurs view this new endeavor through the lens of more traditional paths. Traditional path thinking is at the root of an indescribable doubt, that many founders carry. You feel like you are perpetually behind the power curve, constantly being beaten, always on the short end of the stick. While this can be a bad sign, often it is in fact the opposite. It only feels like having an unanesthetized root canal because you are stripping away the certainty of everything you have been taught in favor of a type of pain you do not yet know will translate into results.

It will work but perhaps not on the time horizon you and those close to you would like for it to. Ultimately, the decision has to be made whether sticking around long enough to see it work, will be worth it. Only you can make the call. Uncertainty is hard - it's part of the process.
